What are indigenous technology and their bases?

Daily Update

In one of my previous blog posts, I discussed how the government is investing a lot to develop indigenous technology. It would not be wrong to say that we are in this era where technology comes with us and is inseparable from ourselves.

What are these technological innovations that can help us to solve our issues and issues with our environment?

The world has been experiencing a massive transformation because of technological advancements. We have become more connected in all aspects of life. This has allowed me to introduce you to the new type of technology. A kind of technology referred to as “indigenous technology”. Indigenous technology covers all sorts of technologies like renewable energy, advanced agriculture, waste management systems, etc. Let us understand what it means to be Indigenous.

Indigenous technologies are also known as natural or organic technologies. As per its name, every technology we are familiar with today is an example of indigenous technology. The word first came into existence when people thought that their way of doing things was better than others. But why should we use indigenous technologies when they offer some advantages and disadvantages? Why should we adopt them if we cannot find out which ones are good for us? How to select a suitable indigenous technology that will suit our requirements.

It is important to remember that indigenous technologies could be very useful on one hand but in another case, indigenous technology is just not that much efficient. Nowadays many companies like TIGER are using artificial intelligence techniques to improve efficiency and productivity. Though these techniques might lead to negative impacts it helps to find out the best solutions for any issue. So should we opt for Artificial Intelligence or other types of technologies? Or how about hybrid technologies which combine both indigenous and non-indigenous technologies? Do they really bring anything advantages over each other and have fewer drawbacks? We will discuss this in detail later in the article.

The major question that arises upon considering such technology is whether it is beneficial. Let us take care about different reasons why we should invest in indigenous technologies:

1. Saving Energy & Environment: Many times we think that developing indigenous technology will reduce our carbon emissions by itself. Most importantly, it will also contribute to saving energy. By reducing our use of electricity and gas, we would not have to worry about running machines and lights. Moreover, it would be able to conserve water and reduce pollution on land. Thus, developing indigenous technology plays a crucial role in our well-being. In addition, it also serves an important role in conserving natural resources. On top of this, most indigenous technologies are also affordable. Just take a look at solar panels, for instance, the production cost of making 1 kilogram of the solar panel is only $0.50/kilo whereas regular solar panel costs roughly $5,000/kilo. Even though the manufacturing costs are expensive, it is worth it since the output is very lucrative.

2. Enhances Water Scarcity: If people in rural areas don’t have enough water, then indigenous technology can enhance this scarcity. For a long time, the limited amount of water in certain regions is an urgent issue in society. People might get sick or thirsty after consuming too much water, thus, people need to look for alternative ways to deal with this problem. One such innovation is aquaponics. Aquaponics is mostly used for soil conservation and even reduces water consumption. The application of various techniques like bioremediation, desalination, etc., can remove toxic metals from water and thus provide plenty of water to everyone. Another technique known as geothermal heating for heat pumps is also widely used around the globe.

There are so many ways by which we can make the planet clean. Our lives depend on water, everything is dependent on fresh and clean water. So what are options available to get around this issue? Yes, you can go through thousands of applications and there is no shame in getting such technologies. Here our focus is on aquaponics, one of the most useful indigenous technology.

3. Improves Rural Economy: An area that lacks agriculture can be a great beneficiary for a country like India. No doubt, farming is a huge business in rural India. However, this business doesn’t require farmers to work day in and day out. Instead of farming, the growing population can grow vegetables and fruits. With the constant growth of cities, the demand for crops and food is constantly increasing. So how can we save our forests? Not only will farming become outdated but the land can also be converted into cultivatable lands.

Also, using technology is also helpful in enhancing the production sector. When the cultivation area becomes smaller, it requires less capital and labor to maintain. They can even hire additional workers if required. This saves on wages of farmers and promotes environmentally friendly practices. All you need to do is to start small and then gain momentum. Hence, farming becomes sustainable, eco-friendly, and profitable.

4. Saves Climate Change: Developed countries often forget about climate change. But people in developed countries take notice of it. According to a report published recently, the global average temperature has risen and it has increased 2 degrees Celsius over the last 50 years. Though this is still a bit far off, it is quite alarming and needs immediate attention and action. Of course, the impact of deforestation is enormous on humanity.

Deforestation has many severe effects on human health like obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and respiratory diseases. Therefore, the future outlook looks bleak, especially for poor countries. So, what should we take to combat this problem? Some ways can be proper agricultural methods to prevent soil erosion or adopting green technologies.

So what makes indigenous technology advantageous? First, let us know what indigenous technology actually is. Secondly, let us learn about it. Then let us see its application in our daily life. Finally, let us consider how technology can enhance our lives. Keep visiting the below links to read the rest of my blog post. Thanks for reading!
